Child Pension

Child pension is paid with children under the age of 18 if either parent is deceased or receives old-age, disability or rehabilitation pension. A condition for child pension payments is that either of the parents or the child itself has been living in Iceland for at least the last three years before the application is made.

  • If both parents are deceased or are pensioners, a double child pension shall be paid
  • Stepchildren and adopted children have the same legal status, but child pension is not paid if the child has a parent alive that has an obligation to support the child financially
  • TR pays child pension when there is confirmation that the child's paternity will not be established
  • Child pension is paid if a child is conceived through artificial insemination. Confirmation from the relevant institution must accompany the application
  • A parent serving a sentence can receive a child pension if the detention has lasted at least three months
  • Child pension is paid to parents or those who are financially responsible for the child/children
  • Parents with a disability grant can receive a child supplement (75% of the child pension)

Child pension is not income-related and is not suspended even if pension payments have been suspended due to income.
